Montiel - Donaire far from being finalized
by Ricardo Lois

Jul 23, 2010 -

The excitement is bubbling for a bantamweight showdown between Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire, but as I discovered a few days ago - there is no indication that the fight is finalized, even though Top Rank Promotion’s Bob Arum has led the public to believe the bout is set for November.

On Wednesday Montiel himself informed The Boxing Truth that he has heard nothing regarding a November bout against Donaire and now Montiel’s promoter Fernando Beltran has confirmed Montiel’s statement.

“Fernando Montiel is willing to fight the best in the world,” Beltran told The Boxing Truth.  “Be it Donaire, or anyone else, Montiel will fight them if the economic conditions surrounding the fight are correct.  Nothing is close to being finalized for a bout with Donaire.”

Beltran, head of Zanfer Promotions - a Mexican based boxing promotional firm, is the official promoter of Montiel, though he works closely with Bob Arum and Top Rank in presenting cards within the Aztec nation.

Montiel’s possible opponents include Donaire, Puerto Rican Erik Morel, and Vic Darchinyan.

Morel has been very vocal regarding his interest in squaring off with Montiel, going as far as saying that he would like to close out his career against the Mexican.  Darchinyan, controlled by Gary Shaw, was brough into the mix when Montiel said he would like to face the Armenian earlier this week.
