Over The Hump Boxing Truth Radio Mailbag - Is Arum pulling a fast one?
by Ricardo Lois

Jul 07, 2010 -

I loved the audio mailbag feature last week but I am shy and rather write in.

Do you think Bob Arum is pulling the wool over our eyes?  He might of presented Floyd Mayweather a contract, but anyone can present somebody a contract.

Is the fight of the Century going down in November?

Kris, Utah

 Kris,

I enjoy listening to the voice mails our readers/listeners leave on The Boxing Truth 24-Hour Hot-line (562-219-3603 or ric.lois on SKYPE) and hope to present more audio mailbags in the future.  Do not be shy, nobody needs to be shy - just leave us your opinions on boxing.

As for Arum pulling a fast one on the boxing world?  It has crossed my mind and would not be the first time he told us the truth, by lying.

What if Arum presented some unreasonable contract to Mayweather, along with a deadline?  If Mayweather does not sign, Arum can move on with his very public plans for Manny Pacquiao to fight Miguel Cotto or Antonio Mayweather in November.

Want to add a little fuel to your fire of doubt?  Margarito is applying for a boxing license in Nevada.  Do you think Mr. Arum pals will nix the request?

A little more kindling?  Arum went on record saying he feels Mayweather will not fight Pacquiao without trainer Uncle Roger in his corner - and Roger has pending legal issues.

One last kick in the gut? In an interview with a U.K. newspaper, Arum said he now believes Manny Pacquiao will fight on for a year or two longer.  Maybe Arum wants boxing fans to boil over in anticipation.

Not a peep from your big mouth after John Duddy got boat raced by Julio Cesar Chavez.

Timothy

I was wrong, very wrong, in my prediction that Mr. Duddy could handle Julio Cesar Chavez.  Against Duddy, a sub-par world class fighter which I picked to win, Chavez looked pretty good.  He fought how he needed to do and showed an improved jab under the tutelage of one Mr. Freddie Roach.

Now I cannot make much out of your sentence, aside from your intent to ridicule me, but don't go and bet any money on Chavez to beat Miguel Cotto if that is your train of thought.  Do not even think that he can hang with Sergio Martinez.

Julio Cesar Chavez is an attraction, and a decent world class fighter, but not a top three guy in the middleweight or junior middleweight class.

My assumption is that you are the one who made a Twitter comment about Chris Arreola fighting on ESPN as a good opportunity for exposure.  Arreola fought on HBO, the best network for boxing in the WORLD!

Osmari

I think that some of the German networks would argue that their media platforms might be bigger for boxing.  A kid by the last name of Kameda also stirs-up several millions of fans to watch his fights on a Japanese network, but I digress.

As Vitali Klitschko beat his face into a pulp, Arreola drew 2.124 million viewers on HBO.  In a defeat against Tomaz Adamek, Arreola helped garner 888,000 sets of eyeballs to his fight.

Over on ESPN, where Arreola will reappear against Manuel Quezada on August 13, 2010, he can expect to draw between 500,000 to 800,000 viewers.  So yes, he might get more views on HBO, but I dare to say that on ESPN he will present himself to some fans who do not purchase HBO and might have never seen Arreola fight before.

Marketed correctly by his Los Angeles-based promoter Dan Goossen, and a soft-touch against Quezada on ESPN could make Arreola even more popular than he already is.

One more thing to consider, do you want to see Arreola vs. Quezada on HBO?  I for one applaud HBO for not presenting to us another one-sided fight featuring Arreola, as they did when he was an "up and comer".

Send your e-mails to
truth@theboxingtruth.com, and they could be edited in their presentation.  Or chime in at 562-219-2603 and your voice mail might make a future edition of the audio mailbag!

Have a great fight week!
